Chess coordinates trainer
Thirty seconds to find, or name, as many squares as you can. Practise from White's side or Black's until e4 and c6 feel as obvious as a street address.
How it works
- Find mode shows a square name. Tap that square on the board.
- Name mode lights a square. Name it on the keypad.
- You have 30 seconds. Your highest score for each level is saved.
- Flip the board to Black's side to practise reading it from the other end.
What it trains
Fluent coordinates let you read notation, follow lessons and recall games without translating each square. They are also the first step to playing blindfold.
Questions
How do I learn chess coordinates quickly?
Short, repeated bursts work best. Thirty seconds a day with the board flipped now and then beats a long session once a week.
Why practise from Black's side?
Half of your games are played from Black's side, and the board looks different. Training both stops you being thrown by it.
