This policy explains what information KingClegg Chess (“we”, “us”), run by KingClegg Technologies, collects when you use this website, why, and the choices you have. We keep it short because we collect very little.

The short version

• You can play every drill without an account. Your best times and settings are then stored only in your own browser. We never receive them.
• If you sign in, we store your sign-in details (through our sign-in provider) and your best results, so they follow you from device to device.
• We do not sell your information, we do not show ads, and we do not use advertising or tracking cookies.
• The site is for people 13 and older to create an account. Younger players can play without one. See “Children” below.

What we collect

If you do not sign in

The site saves your best results and display settings (board colours, piece set, sound) in your browser’s local storage on your device. This stays on your device. Clearing your browser data removes it.

If you sign in

Sign-in is provided by Clerk, using “Sign in with Google”. When you sign in we receive the account details Google and Clerk pass on: your name, email address, profile picture and a unique account ID. We store your best results against that account ID in our database so they can follow you across devices. We do not receive your Google password.

Technical information

Like any website, our hosting provider (Cloudflare) processes technical information such as your IP address, browser type and the pages requested, in order to deliver the site and keep it secure. Pages load fonts from Google Fonts, so your browser also contacts Google when a page loads.

Messages

If you email us, we keep the message and your address so we can reply.

How we use it

• To run the site and your account, and to sync your best results.
• To keep the site secure and working, and to fix problems.
• To answer you when you contact us.

We do not use your information for advertising and we do not sell it or share it for advertising.

Who else handles it

We use a small number of service providers who process information only to provide their service to us:

• Cloudflare: hosting, security and the database that holds saved results.
• Clerk: sign-in and account management, including the cookies that keep you signed in.
• Google: “Sign in with Google” and Google Fonts.

We may also disclose information if the law requires it or to protect the rights and safety of our users and the site.

Cookies and local storage

We use local storage for your results and settings, and Clerk sets the cookies needed to keep you signed in. These are strictly necessary for the features you ask for. We do not use advertising, analytics or tracking cookies. If that changes we will update this page first.

Children

KingClegg Chess is a chess training site that people of all ages may enjoy, but accounts are for people aged 13 or older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Players under 13 can use every drill without signing in, and in that case their results stay on their own device and are not sent to us. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child under 13 has signed in or sent us personal information, email us at the address below and we will delete it. Players aged 13 to 17 should have a parent or guardian’s permission to create an account.

How long we keep it

We keep your account information and saved results while your account is active. You can ask us to delete your account and saved results at any time (see below), and we will do so within a reasonable time. Technical logs kept by our providers are deleted on their own schedules.

Your choices

• Play without signing in, and clear your browser’s site data to remove everything stored on your device.
• Ask us to see, correct or delete the information we hold about you, or to delete your account, by emailing us.
• You may have additional rights under the laws of your state or country (for example in California or the European Union). Tell us what you would like and we will respond as the law requires.

Where information is stored

Our providers operate in the United States and other countries. By using the site you understand that your information may be processed there.

Security

We use well-established providers and encrypted connections. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Changes

If we change this policy we will update the date above, and for significant changes we will tell signed-in users.
